I wanted to like this so badly, but it just wasn't that good. In this philosophical essay he expresses the desire to articulate a sort of theory of everything using his poetic intuition. If he had sick to that plan, I think it could have been quite a lot better than it was. Instead, he can't seem to help himself from slipping into his pseudo-scientific voice, and as a consequence he ends up ensnaring himself in the very technicalities he had hoped to transcend.

I would recommend people skip this confused pseudoscience and read up instead on the Olber's paradox directly. It's a clever idea that Poe discusses here (and he deserves credit for being one of the first to make hay over it), but it's unfortunately not the clearest or more enlightening discussion. Poe's agenda clouds his exposition.

As I said, I really wanted to like this book. I think Poe is awesome, and cosmology and grand theories of everything have always fascinated me. But combining two good things doesn't always yield something good.

Great book and free
Read this and you might think that Poe was way ahead of his time, An unusual piece by Poe but very interesting.
Undiscovered book by favorite author. What could go wrong? Not at all what I expected. Way over my head. Only understood about half of what I read. Had to give up, to preserve fondness for author.
A perplexing and complex "poem" written by Poe to use a quasi-scientific method to try to prove the existence of god. The question is he serious or is this a parody? At least one great mind I have encountered thinks he is serious. I don't know!
". . . therefore, we should be warranted in assuming all that has been mentioned, but for the reflection, first, that supererogation is not presumable of any Divine Act; and, secondly, that the object supposed in view, appears as feasible when some of the conditions in question are dispensed with, in the beginning, as when all are understood immediately to exist. I mean to say that some are involved in the rest, or so instantaneous a consequence of them as to make the distinction inappreciable." ??!? What a wacky and interesting piece of work this essay is. Although you'll find it in any Complete Works (the best edition is probably the Delphi Classics), the price here is perfect if you don't have Poe's more bizarre essays. This is good on a lark as water closet reading, if larks are appropriate there. I prefer ravens, myself.
Okay, this is a book about outdated cosmological science. So why read it? Well, for one thing, it's an excellent period piece. It shows the probings of one extremely talented mind trying to make sense of the universe, before the introduction of certain modern concepts such as relativity, quantum mechanics, and space probes to Pluto, to name just a few. This book would be a gem for any historian of scientific thought. Also, and this I think is what would most likely grab the generally informed reader, even with the limited knowledge available to him at that time, he still manages to point the way (somewhat blindly to be sure) to such future concepts as the big bang, multiverses, and black holes. And he was not even a professional scientist. This is just further evidence of Poe's incredibly fertile intellect. Even his theological musings are advanced for his time. Remember, back in those days, (and unfortunately, still in our own time, in certain circles), the generally accepted Christian theology was that God had created the universe, as is, a mere few thousand years ago. Admittedly, this book is not for everyone. It is certainly not your typical Poe. But for a discerning reader, I would say this was well worth a look.
No matter how many times I read this, it's always good, clean fun. I enjoyed this and recommend it highly.
