I got this book for one of its longer poems, called "The Bothie of Tober-Na Vuolich," which is an idyll featuring some vapid characters on a nature romp. Arthur Hugh Clough's work is fun to read, if a bit silly in overall tone, but not much happens in it, which became irritating after 20 pages or so. I wanted more plot to this poem, which follows the form of an epic poem and is written in dactylic hexameter, the epic form used in ancient Greek books such as The Iliad and The Odyssey and the Roman work "Aeneid." If you've read your ancient Greeks you know epic poetry can pack some serious wallop in its stanzas, but Arthur Hugh Clough doesn't have the language power of Homer or the vision of Virgil in this work. If you're looking for a survey of poetic works from the mid-19th century, this is a good resource, but Longfellow does it all better than Clough, in my opinion, and you're better off buying Longfellow's "Evangeline and Other Poems" and reading it. Get Longfellow first, and then, if you're looking to compare Longfellow to his contemporaries, get Clough for contrast.Product details
